ITEM DESCRIPTION

Vintage tools - sharpening stone D375

Up for sale is a genuine Antique Natural CHARNLEY FOREST / Charnwood SHARPENING STONE from England.

The stone is 197mm long, 45mm wide & a tapering to 40mm. Due to the tapering shape & the large chamfer off one corner, it indicates that this is a hand hewn stone, not machine cut. More than likely by an itinerant stone gatherer in the 19th century, housed in a Mahogany box.

Great for chisels, plane blades, knives & your straight razors, its a finishing stone & it puts a superlative edge on tools, I use a Charnley Forest stone if I want to take my chisels or plane blades to the "next level" after sharpening on a Washita, these are superfine & finer than a hard Arkansas in my opinion. It's a light green with the typical red veining through the stone.

Weight - 1.36kg

CONDITION

This sharpening stone is in authentic vintage condition, wear and tear consistent with age and use, a large chunk off the end of the mahogany lid. A genuine natural CHARNLEY Forest stone. I would consider it flat enough to use as is, but it may require flattening to your requirements, some scratches to the faces, but they are light & will just work out. There’s a magnificent stone in there, these aren't commercially available any more.

Please check the photos as they are part of the description.
