1. Monday 31st of March 2025 9am-4.30pm

or

2.  Monday 14th of April 2025 9am-4.30pm

We’re offering a small group (max. 6 persons) 1-day (9-4.30 pm) A HANDS-ON SAW SHARPENING COURSE WITH SAWMAKERS MIKE AND JIM OF HERITAGE SAWS AT VINTAGE TOOL SHOP, 549 High St Northcote 3070.

Like other woodworking tools, SAWS need maintenance to PERFORM at their best, but the days of taking your saws into the hardware store for sharpening are long gone.

This COURSE is designed for those eager to SHARPEN and maintain western-style BACK and HAND SAWS and will take participants step-by-step through the processes by which they can maintain and return their saws to a working condition.

• No prior experience is necessary, although a basic understanding of hand saws and using hand saws would be beneficial.

Saw sharpening, or ‘saw doctoring’ as it is colloquially termed, has not been formally taught in trade schools since the 1980s.

SAW SHARPENING is fundamentally straightforward and anyone can learn it, but the skills are much easier to acquire with hands-on instruction and tuition.

Participants in this course will be stepped through the PROCESS of ASSESSING the saw, JOINTING the tooth line, SHAPING and SHARPENING the teeth, SETTING, test CUTTING and FINE-TUNING for optimum cutting performance.

• Note that all saws are provided to practice on for standardisation purposes.  Full course notes will also be provided to reinforce the course tuition.

Get back to the heart of working with tools like the craftspeople of old - learn to MAINTAIN YOUR SAWS instead of buying another cheap throwaway saw when it dulls.

• Participants will start by SHARPENING a simple rip TENON SAW, which will familiarise people with backsaws and teach the critical processes of jointing, shaping and sharpening teeth, setting and tuning.  This knowledge is directly transferable to both dovetail saws and the large hand rip saws used in carpentry.

• Participants will then sharpen a CROSSCUT HAND SAW, building on the skills acquired with the first saw by adding FLEAM (additional bevels) at the sharpening stage to optimise cutting wood across the grain.

• Please wear ENCLOSED FOOTWEAR, be aware that sharpening saws is a PHYSICALLY DEMANDING process & some upper body strength is required.  If you wear glasses please bring them because you can’t sharpen what you can’t see!

• Note that this class needs a MINIMUM of 4 STUDENTS to run & may be postponed until numbers are right to run.

TEA & COFFEE is provided, students will need to bring their own LUNCH or buy from one of the many vendors on High St.

Saws, files, saw vices & saw sets are all provided.
