ITEM DESCRIPTION

Vintage tools - brace T1221

Up for sale is a FRAY Spofford WIMBLE BRACE with ROSEWOOD handles in a 12” sweep.

This is a Spofford brace, unique among hand braces.  Invented by Nelson Spofford in the late 1800s, these braces are unique for their type of split chuck, often termed a "clamshell" chuck. Different in that was not composed of separate pieces, the chuck is really a terminal fork of the frame that pinches the bit when tightened with a thumb screw. This design proved to be rugged and held bits securely.

An extremely handy tool, great for boring holes & excellent for driving screws in with a slotted tip bit, the leverage you can get with a brace is amazing. Never has a flat battery or need to run a lead out, very handy indeed.

Weight - 940g

• The auger bit in the photos is for display only, not a part of this sale •

CONDITION
This brace is in authentic vintage condition, wear and tear consistent with age and use, a small hole drilled in the rear turning handle, nice wood on this one. An uncommon & handy brace for the unplugged workshop.
