SOLD D968 Vintage small LIGNUM VITAE Wooden PLANE
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Vintage - D968
Up for sale is a gorgeous antique genuine LIGNUM VITAE SMOOTHING PLANE, probably made by a Shipwight in some maritime port or onboard a tall ship.
It will be an awesome little user for cranky grained timbers as the thick blade is bedded at York pitch around 52° or thereabouts, plus with the self lubricating properties of LIGNUM VITAE, it should be a joy to use.
“Lignum vitae is a wood from trees of the Genus Guaiacum. The trees are indigenous to the Caribbean and the northern coast of South America and have been an important export crop to Europe since the beginning of the 16th century. Lignum vitae is hard and durable, and is also the densest wood traded. It’s used to make lawn bowls, croquet mallets & it has seen widespread historical usage in mortars and pestles and for wood carvers' mallets. Lignum vitae was used for ship and submarine propeller bearings until the 1960s” - Wikipedia
